How Big Is the Global Gambling Market?
Third-party research puts the global gambling market at roughly $601 billion in 2026, but that figure is modeled, not counted. Summing what regulators actually report across nine sourced regions (the United States, Europe, Australia, Macau, the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Ontario, Canada, and South Korea) comes to about $343.3 billion at current exchange rates. The remaining ~$258 billion gap is mostly gray-market activity and regulated markets this page doesn't yet source individually; see what's excluded, and why below.
Methodology & Scope
"Gross Gaming Revenue" (GGR) and "Gross Gambling Yield" (GGY) are the same metric under different regulatory names: what operators retain after paying out winnings, before other costs. See the glossary for the full definition. This page uses two different kinds of number, and doesn't blend them into one misleading total:
- SourcedBottom-up, from primary regulator/trade-body reporting. Built only from jurisdictions where a regulator or national trade body publishes a verifiable GGR total: US (commercial and tribal), Europe (EU-27 plus UK), Australia, Macau, the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Ontario Canada, and South Korea. Great Britain and Ireland are shown separately as drill-downs of the Europe figure, not added on top of it, since both are already inside "EU-27 plus UK."
- ModeledTop-down, from a named third-party estimate. The $601B / $728.8B figures come from a single research firm's proprietary model, which explicitly includes gray-market and unregulated activity that no regulator reports. Treat it as an estimate, not a count.
Sourced Regulated Markets
| Market | GGR | ≈ USD | Period | Source |

| United States, commercial | $78.72B | $78.72B | CY2025 | American Gaming Association |

| Europe, EU-27 plus UK | €123.4B | $142.7B | CY2024 | EGBA / H2 Gambling Capital |
| Australia | A$31.5B | $22.2B | FY2022-23 | Qld Govt Statistician's Office (via AIHW) |
| Macau | MOP247.4B | $30.8B | CY2025 | DICJ (via GGB Magazine) |

USD conversions are illustrative, calculated at approximate mid-market rates on or near 3 Sep 2026 (EUR/USD 1.156, AUD/USD 0.703, PHP/USD 0.0164, ZAR/USD 0.0614, CAD/USD 0.723); Macau and Brazil figures use USD conversions published directly alongside the source figure. Periods aren't synchronized across rows, spanning 2022-23 to 2025, so treat the total as directional, not a single-year snapshot. Brazil's row covers only its newly regulated online sports-betting and iGaming market, not lottery or other gambling categories outside that regulation. Canada's row covers only Ontario's regulated online market: Canada has no national gambling regulator (each province runs its own lottery/gaming corporation), so land-based casinos, lotteries, and every other province are excluded here. South Korea's figure covers casino gaming only (all 18 casinos, including Kangwon Land); it doesn't include the country's legal sports toto or lottery products.
Drill-downs (already counted inside the Europe row above, not additive)
| Market | GGY / GGR | ≈ USD | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | £16.8B | $22.7B | FY Apr24-Mar25 | UK Gambling Commission |
| Ireland | €1.17-2.57B | $1.4-3.0B | CY2025 est. | Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland |
Ireland's wide range reflects the GRAI's first-year estimate, published in its inaugural annual report; expect this to narrow as the regulator's own licensing and reporting data matures.
What's Excluded, and Why
Rather than fold everything outside the nine sourced regions into one vague "rest of world" gap, here is the specific status of each major market that isn't in the sourced total above, split into markets that are hard to source for a structural reason, and markets that simply haven't been researched for this page yet.
Structurally excluded: a real data-availability reason, not an oversight
| Market | Why It's Not Here |
|---|---|
| Japan | Pachinko, Japan's dominant gambling-adjacent activity, operates under a legal "prize exchange" structure and isn't classified or reported as gambling revenue by any regulator. |
| Singapore | Its two integrated resorts (Marina Bay Sands, Resorts World Sentosa) disclose only through parent-company quarterly earnings, Las Vegas Sands and Genting Singapore, not a consolidated national GGR figure. Deriving one from EBITDA data would mean something different from every other row in this table. |
| Hong Kong | The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the only legal operator (racing, football betting, lottery), publicly reports betting turnover (HK$143.3B for the 2025-26 season) but not net revenue, the same disclosure problem as Singapore. A true GGR figure may exist inside its full annual financial statements, but wasn't accessible in this pass. |
| Canada, beyond Ontario iGaming | Canada has no national gambling regulator. Each province runs its own lottery/gaming corporation and reports separately (or not publicly at all), so there's no single source for a countrywide figure the way the AGA provides for the US. |
| Argentina | Regulated province-by-province (Buenos Aires, CABA, Cordoba, and others each license separately) with no national aggregator, the same structural problem as Canada. Unlike Ontario, no single province's figure stood out as a clean, citable proxy in this pass. |
| Mainland China | Commercial gambling is illegal. Macau and Hong Kong operate under separate legal frameworks and are treated individually; Macau is already sourced above. |
| Most of the Middle East | Gambling is illegal or heavily restricted across most of the region. The UAE's first licensed casino resort, Wynn Al Marjan Island, is under construction and not yet open as of this page's last update, so there is no regulated revenue to report yet. |
Researched, no verifiable GGR total found: only tax or forecast figures turned up
| Market | What We Found Instead |
|---|---|
| Colombia | Coljuegos publishes tax-contribution figures (e.g. COP 1.3 trillion transferred to the state from online gambling in a recent period) but no headline GGR total surfaced in this pass; tax revenue isn't a reliable stand-in, since tax rates vary by product and change over time. |
| Mexico | SEGOB licenses operators but doesn't appear to publish an aggregate public GGR figure; only third-party market-research forecasts (e.g. "$40.64B by 2033") were found, which are modeled estimates, not counts. |
| Nigeria | Only market-research forecast figures found (e.g. "$3.63B in 2025"); no aggregate GGR total from the National Lottery Regulatory Commission surfaced. |
| Kenya | The Kenya Revenue Authority publishes betting-tax collections (e.g. KSh 12.47B in a recent period) but that's tax, not GGR, and Kenya applies multiple different betting-related taxes; converting one to the other reliably wasn't possible from what's public. |
Plus unregulated and offshore activity everywhere, including within markets already sourced above; no methodology, ours included, fully captures that by definition.
Growth Forecast
The only multi-year series available from a single consistent source is the modeled global estimate. Actual historical data would need to be assembled year-by-year from each regulator separately, which is a future update to this page, not this one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Global Gambling Market Size in 2026?
Third-party estimates put it at about $601 billion in 2026, per Research and Markets, a modeled figure covering casinos, lotteries, sports betting, and bingo, both online and land-based.
How Much of That Is Actually Verifiable Through Regulators?
Based on primary regulator and trade-body reporting across nine regions, the US, Europe (EU-27 plus UK), Australia, Macau, the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Ontario Canada, and South Korea, roughly $343.3 billion is directly sourced, about 57% of the modeled global figure. The remaining ~$258 billion gap is mostly gray-market activity plus specific regulated markets not yet included here; see what's excluded, and why.
What's the Difference Between GGR and GGY?
They're the same metric under different names: the amount operators retain after paying out winnings, before other costs. UK regulators call it "Gross Gambling Yield (GGY)"; most other markets call it "Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)." Full definition in the glossary.
Is the US or European Gambling Market Bigger?
Europe (EU-27 plus UK) is larger, about $142.7B (€123.4B, 2024) versus the US's combined commercial-and-tribal total of about $124.9B (2025). The figures aren't from the same year, so treat this as directional rather than exact.
How Fast Is the Global Gambling Market Growing?
Research and Markets forecasts 4.9% compound annual growth from 2026 to 2030, taking the modeled global market from about $601B to about $728.8B.
